Mabel “Laurie” Paddleboard might just hold the secret to the fountain of youth. As a resident at Beacon Hill for the past 18 years, Laurie is the embodiment of the vibrant and active lifestyles fostered at Lifespace communities. She participates in exercise classes five days a week and reads and writes nearly every day. This is in addition to her weekly hair and makeup routine. The energetic great grandmother recently celebrated her 105th birthday at an elaborate Nordic dance party held at the community.
“Laurie deeply cares about people, and the party was our way of showing her that we feel the same,” explained Natalie Brennan, lifestyle lead at Beacon Hill. “She’s a great example of how to live life to the fullest. She’s always having fun and looking for the good in others.”
Months of preparation and planning went into the event, which was an ode to Laurie’s Swedish and Norwegian heritage. The celebration was filled with music, dancing and a special performance by a local Nordic dance group. More than 100 residents, team members and family were in attendance as Laurie blew out the candles on her birthday cake.
Fellow residents, team members and family describe Laurie as a caring and jovial soul. Her daughter, Jane Hendrickson, was ecstatic to be celebrating the milestone.
“My mom has always been a social butterfly. She has a terrific sense of humor and is very optimistic about life. That puts a smile on everyone she meets,” Jane explained.
Natalie added, “People are naturally drawn to Laurie. I don’t think she knows the full extent of the impact she has on others, but we all look up to her. We couldn’t be celebrating someone better.”
