Growing Together

In the world of senior living and health care, change is constant. We are experiencing a time of transition – and tremendous opportunities for growth. I believe the mark of a well-run organization is the ability to adapt smoothly to new circumstances. As one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit senior living systems, Lifespace is financially sound and well-suited to face a changing national landscape.

The senior living industry is experiencing positive growth, and Lifespace is no exception. With increased demand from a rising senior population that has high expectations for comfort, convenience and quality, many not-for-profit providers are expanding and adding amenities – and Lifespace is leading the way. This year we will begin the process to redevelop five of our 12 communities and continue to invest in enhanced programs and services. With better technology, restaurant-style dining and our new Living Lifespace program, our team members are delivering outstanding service and ensuring high quality of life for our residents.

More senior living providers are also benefiting from collaboration, which we keep in mind as we continue to seek opportunities to do more good. Whether through mergers, acquisitions, partnerships or coordination of care in accountable care organizations, we simply get more done when we work together. Joint ventures help providers increase cost efficiency, improve care and serve more seniors. These are our goals as we imagine what’s next for Lifespace.

In the coming months, we face a number of changes involving health care. The Affordable Care Act could be repealed, and there may be alterations to Medicare and Medicaid. While there is no agreed-upon plan to replace the Affordable Care Act, the most vulnerable aspects of the legislation include the mandates for individuals and employers, Medicaid expansion and the health care exchanges.

Lifespace residents, most of whom are covered through Medicare and private insurance, are not likely to be directly affected by many of these changes. We will closely monitor the impact on the larger senior community and provide our input when necessary. At Lifespace, our residents enjoy the peace of mind, service and convenience that comes from Life Care, which protects them from steep increases in medical expenses with stable costs, below-market rates and lifelong services. Regardless of what changes occur in the health care system, our residents will continue to enjoy the same exceptional services and high quality care they have come to expect from Lifespace.

The future is impossible to predict, but our promise will remain the same: Lifespace will stay true to its mission to create vibrant communities where team members are valued and residents flourish.

– By Sloan Bentley, President and CEO of Lifespace Communities
